A Storybook Retreat in the Cotswolds

Published on

May 23, 2025

Nestled in the idyllic village of Blockley, a quintessential gem in the Cotswolds, this newly renovated stone cottage is part of August’s Demi-Quartier Premium Collection and offers the perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort. It’s a true haven for those seeking the tranquility and character of the English countryside. Notably, the cottage is a Grade II listed building, recognised for its architectural and historical significance, a designation that ensures its heritage is carefully protected and celebrated. The August renovation honoured this legacy by returning the home to its original charm, with thoughtful details like hand-painted wainscotting, exposed beams and brickwork, and printed botanical wallpaper. The interiors are rooted in a classic Cotswold palette, featuring warm greens, deep reds, and vibrant yellows, bringing the natural surroundings indoors while creating a warm, inviting space that feels both elegant and lived-in.

Little Manor: Where Heritage Meets Home

A Perfect Location for Countryside Living

Surrounded by rolling hills, honey-coloured stone buildings, and winding country lanes, the Demi-Quartier home is steeped in the timeless beauty that defines this beloved region. Its elite location allows August Homeowners to enjoy a short stroll to the village centre, where they will find charming tea rooms, traditional pubs, and the historic St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church. Right on the doorstep are scenic walking paths, including routes that form part of the Cotswold Way and lead to nearby villages like Chipping Campden and Broadway.

Stone, Wood, and Warmth at First Glance

Named Little Manor, this countryside retreat immediately evokes classic Cotswold charm. Crafted from locally quarried stone, the warm honey-coloured façade is accented by a wooden front door and traditional lanterns, inviting you into a timeless countryside retreat. A pair of well-worn boots on the stone steps hints at a life well-lived outdoors, while a dry-stone wall and potted greenery add rustic charm to the garden entrance. From above, the house sits nestled in a lush landscape of terraced paths, mature trees, and peaceful lawns, offering an idyllic view of rural English living.

Inside the Storybook Cottage

Inside, the Little Manor exudes warmth and character. After completing major structural changes, the August Design Team was able to fully unravel the cottage charm of this enchanted Cotswolds home. Through the renovation, the original wooden flooring was unveiled where its rich tones and natural beauty continue to add enduring charm, grounding the space in this countryside mansion. The original oakbeams and flagstone floors in the home also add to the charm and to create an enchanted living space.

A Cohesive Colour Palette: Cotswolds Forest Green

The main living room was reimagined to reflect the surrounding forest scenery, bringing the outdoors in. Forest-green accents echo the landscape, from the striped lounge sofas and ceiling-length curtains to the fresh bouquet and deep green detailing on the cushions. Rustic touches like the wooden door panelling nod to the natural setting, connecting the space to the enchanted garden just beyond. A woodburner adds both warmth and a cosy gathering point for colder days. Mullioned windows flood the room with natural light and frame idyllic views of the village and the lush countryside, grounding the Demi-Quartier home in its leafy surroundings.

A warm, farmhouse-style kitchen brought to life with sunny yellow cabinetry and rustic wood accents—classic Cotswolds charm with a fresh twist.

The Kitchen: A Sunlit Farmhouse Heart

The kitchen is the warm and welcoming heart of Little Manor, blending classic Cotswold cottage charm with thoughtful modern updates. Bespoke cabinetry painted in a cheerful yet refined yellow sets the tone, striking a perfect balance with the room’s more neutral finishes. A newly installed wooden countertop adds warmth and organic texture, beautifully complementing traditional details like the farmhouse sink and the iconic AGA. A range of local cookbooks sits ready for inspiration, adding both personality and a touch of local flavour to the space. Together, these elements create a kitchen that feels both timeless and functional.

Framed by mullioned windows and painted mouldings, the room is bathed in natural light throughout the day. It’s designed for everyday ease and memorable moments, whether you're preparing a quiet breakfast, hosting family meals, or simply enjoying the view onto the garden terrace.

A Dining Room Designed for Gathering and Garden Views

Just off the kitchen on the ground floor, the dining room offers a seamless blend of countryside elegance and indoor-outdoor living. Large windows and French doors open directly to the garden terrace, inviting natural light to flood the space and encouraging a fluid connection with the outdoors. A long wooden table anchors the room, perfect for lively gatherings or quiet morning coffees with the doors ajar. The soft tones, striped curtains, and antique sideboard add warmth and tradition, while the gentle flow between kitchen, dining, and garden creates a seamless transition between indoor comfort and outdoor charm, combining practicality with cosy elegance.

A Study in Stillness and Style

Tucked away for privacy yet full of character, the Little Manor study is a quiet retreat designed for moments of focus and calm. A palette of rustic reds and deep blues sets a rich, grounded tone, while built-in shelving showcases books, personal treasures, and curated details that bring warmth and individuality to the space. A vintage-style desk and wooden chair is placed beneath soft, layered lighting, ideal for reading, writing, or remote working. With its cosy atmosphere and thoughtful touches, the study is both functional and deeply inviting.

Cotswold Bedrooms: A Story in Every Room

Serene Slumber: Bedrooms Rooted in Storybook Charm

Upstairs, the bedrooms of Little Manor have been thoughtfully curated to reflect the timeless tranquillity of the Cotswolds. The primary bedroom, nestled beneath sloped ceilings, is wrapped in a soft green botanical print that mirrors the garden views just beyond the mullioned windows. A handcrafted olive headboard and layers of natural textures, wool throws, warm candlelight, and a sculptural lamp, create a deeply restful retreat that feels grounded and elegant.

Each of the secondary bedrooms carries its own unique charm while maintaining a cohesive connection to the Cotswold surroundings. One bedroom features a striking hand-painted botanical mural in soft autumnal hues, paired with a tufted linen headboard and classic wood furnishings, blending playful storytelling with timeless warmth.

Another bedroom embraces a bolder palette through its berry-toned wallpaper, where olive green and navy blue tones are layered through pillows and upholstery in the headboard, bringing a whimsy yet refined energy into the space.

A third bedroom embraces a quieter elegance: a serene palette of soft greys, muted greens, and deep navy accents sets a restful tone. Hand-painted vertical stripes on the walls nod subtly to classic British interiors, while scalloped lamp shades, exposed beams, and curated textiles lend the room a quietly refined character. It’s a layered and considered space, perfect for unwinding after a day spent wandering through countryside trails.

Together, the bedrooms create a rhythm of personality and calm, grounded in nature, history, and the unmistakable charm of the English countryside. Across all rooms, carefully chosen details - from scalloped lamp shades to layered cushions - create a sense of gentle rhythm and visual harmony.

The Family Bathroom: Traditional Elegance

Among the home’s several thoughtfully designed bathrooms, the family bathroom preserves and enhances the cottage’s timeless charm. Elegant navy wainscoting grounds the space with richness, perfectly complementing the inherited freestanding bath and tying in with the home’s broader palette. A bold, heritage-inspired floral wallpaper brings warmth and character, while classic brass fixtures and soft lighting add a gentle sense of nostalgia.

The final layer of tiling and the natural wood vanity add both texture and depth, blending traditional materials with subtle modern updates. It’s a room that feels both refined and welcoming, offering a peaceful place to start or end the day, in keeping with the rest of the Little Manor’s quiet countryside elegance.
