Winter in Mallorca: A Local’s Guide, With Tara

“For me, the biggest change winter brings is the pace,” Tara says. “I’ve lived in Palma for six years now, and winter is when the island really feels like itself.” With fewer visitors, daily life takes on a familiar, almost village-like rhythm. “There are no crowds, no busy roads. It’s mostly locals and people who live here all year round. Mallorca feels calmer, more authentic.”

Her winter rituals follow that unhurried rhythm. Mornings often begin with long dog walks along empty beaches in the crisper winter air fresh. Local markets, such as Pere Garau in Palma, keep their lively Spanish atmosphere but feel far less overwhelming in winter. “I often recommend a wonderful local chef to homeowners who stay here year-round,” Tara says. “They’ll take you through the markets, help you choose the best seasonal produce, and then teach you how to prepare traditional Spanish dishes. In winter, it’s even more special, you can really soak up the market atmosphere without the crowds.”

Palma’s old town is another winter favourite. Browsing along Passeig del Born or Jaume III feels relaxed, with bigger brands sitting alongside small, independent boutiques tucked into cobbled side streets. Tara always recommends stopping at Ca’n Joan de s’Aigo for thick hot chocolate, which goes perfectly with what she attests is the best almond ice cream and ensaïmadas, a true Mallorcan delicacy, especially comforting in the cooler months.

“Lunches are never rushed in winter,” Tara explains. “A walk along the promenade from Portixol to Can Pastilla feels like a real treat, and finishing with a relaxed paella by the water is the perfect winter ritual.” Village cafés also become places to pause rather than pass through, while quieter roads make winter ideal for cycling, golf, and even horse riding along the beach, something Tara often recommends when the sand is empty and the air is cool. Evenings naturally draw back to the home, where fires are lit early, and there’s no need to rush anywhere.

Winter is ideal for exploring Mallorca on foot and spending time outdoors. Without the intensity of the summer sun, it’s easier to walk, cycle, and really appreciate the landscape, especially in the island’s villages, which feel calmer and more welcoming once summer crowds fade.

“I love the walk to Biniaraix in the Sóller valley,” Tara says. “Passing citrus groves and the Ecovinyassa estate, where vineyards, olive trees, and orchards sit against the Tramuntana mountains, feels like stepping into another world. A coffee stop at Can'Nico along the way makes it feel like a gentle day out rather than a hike.”

Winter walks, Tara adds, always feel a little more rewarding because they end in good food. Cooler temperatures make longer walks and bike rides feel earned, followed by a well-deserved lunch. She loves the coastal cycle routes from Palma along the Ruta Litoral, finishing with paella at El Marino as a special treat. “And when the sun appears,” she adds, “terraces are still very much in use.”

Another favourite is the walk from Sóller to Port de Sóller. “Stopping for a long lunch at Ses Oliveres feels earned after the fresh air and views. And the tram back is the perfect way to end a gentle winter day.” For longer routes, walks from Sóller to Fornalutx or Deià wind through olive groves and mountain views, with time to pause over coffee, almond cake, or even a hike down to Cala Deià if the weather allows.

“It’s in winter that places like Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa, and Pollença really come into their own,” Tara adds. “You don’t feel part of the tourism mill. Roads are quiet, parking is easy, and everyone seems calmer, better rested, spending more time with family and friends.” It’s a season for wandering without an agenda and noticing corners that are often missed in peak summer.

Markets become a winter ritual too. Sóller’s Saturday market, and Santa Maria or Consell on Sundays, are perfect for slow browsing, without the rush of summer. Antiques, ceramics, and small finds often make their way back into August homes as meaningful reminders of time spent on the island. And when it rains, as it sometimes does, Tara often recommends turning to indoor pleasures that feel just as considered. Art and painting courses just outside Sóller, close to our Sartoux Collection home, offer a relaxed way to spend a winter afternoon. “It’s a lovely way to pass a rainy day,” she says, “and you leave with something you’ve made yourself, a really special souvenir to take home.”

Preparing homes for winter arrivals is one of Tara’s favourite parts of the season. “Everything feels more intentional,” she says. “We’re not racing around the island, so we can spend more time in each home, taking care of the details.”

Firewood is stacked by the hearths and homes with log stoves and fireplaces truly come into their own, becoming places for movie nights, board games, and long evenings indoors, while terraces are still enjoyed during sunny winter afternoons.

Many homeowners are surprised by how much they love winter stays. Some even joke about keeping it a secret. As Tara puts it, “You see the island differently in winter. It’s calmer, greener, bluer, and you have the space to really enjoy it, which is why I love being able to prepare homes carefully, so every arrival feels special.”

For those planning their first winter stay, her advice is simple: plan lightly, check what’s open, and leave room for unplanned moments. Because in winter, Mallorca isn’t about doing more, it’s about slowing down enough to notice what’s already there.
