Darren and Albina
How one Miami couple found their perfect summer rhythm in Europe, from city stays to cool mountain days in the French Alps

For Albina and Darren, summer in Europe is no longer confined to one destination. As Homeowners in both August’s Fornalutx Premium Collection and St Germain Pied à Terre Collection, they spend the warmer months moving between city and countryside, from Rome and Paris to Tuscany, the South of France and the French Alps. Based in Miami, where summer heat can be intense, the mountains have become one of their most treasured escapes: a place of cool air, long walks, e-bike rides and shifting views of Mont Blanc. In this conversation, they share why the French Alps hold such appeal in summer, how August has reshaped the way they travel, and the joy of sharing these homes with family and friends.

When you stay in these homes, you feel like you're part of the community rather than just a visitor or a stranger. You can go to the local grocery store, pick up the things you like, wake up in the morning, make your own breakfast, and enjoy the beautiful countryside around you. It feels much more like living in the destination rather than simply visiting it.
To start, could you introduce yourselves and share how your journey with August first began?
Albina: We’re Albina and Darren, based in Miami, Florida. Our journey with August began when I first mentioned to my husband that I’d love to own a place in Europe. His response was, “Oh sure, I don’t know about that.”
Then, to my surprise, on my birthday, he arranged a call for us to speak with August. And for us, we were looking at perhaps one apartment in Europe, but with August you could get a collection of five apartments. Which felt like a dream come true!
Darren: And I remember, I was just searching online for “vacation homes in the South of France” and then a few advertisements on August came up, so that’s how I came across the company.
Why did you decide on joining August as a co-ownership model instead of owning a traditional second home?
Darren: At the time, I was really pushing for us to build a lake house in Tennessee. We had already purchased the lot and were looking at a budget of around $1m to either buy or custom-build our dream lake house.
Then we started looking at the opportunity with August, and it completely shifted our perspective. We realised that, instead of putting that investment into a single property in Tennessee, we could own shares in five exceptional properties across Europe.
It really became a choice between having one lake house in Tennessee or gaining access to a collection of homes in some of Europe’s most amazing cities.
Darren: I also knew that managing a vacation home would come with a lot of hassles, and that's true even here in the U.S. So a big part of the appeal was the ease of administration. We had talked about buying a house in France, but then you start thinking about all the red tape, the language barriers, and everything that comes with owning property in another country.
What really stood out was that August takes care of those complexities, making the whole experience much easier.
The other thing was that we were a little concerned about getting burnt out in the same place. If you own one vacation home, you're always going back to the same destination. With August, you have the variety of multiple places, which gives you a lot more flexibility and a much broader travel experience.
You are part of two collections, why did you decide on joining the Pied a Terre and Premium Collection in particular?
Albina: Well, one of the reasons was that we could have our family join us during the summertime. It's really convenient for family reunions because we can all get together and experience different places rather than meeting in the same destination every year.
Darren: We live in Miami, which is our primary residence, and it's just so hot during the summer. We were looking for an economical way to spend the entire summer in Europe. As we looked into it, we realized that one August Collection would give us about six weeks during the summer, based on how the points allocation works.
So we knew it would take two Collections to get the full 12 weeks, and we've been able to do exactly that, to spend the entire three months of summer in Europe.
At the same time, we didn't want to be limited to just one type of destination. We didn't want to be out in the countryside the whole time, but we also didn't want to spend all our time in cities. What we really liked was being able to create a mix of both urban and countryside experiences, which gives us a great variety and a much richer overall experience.
Can you tell us a little about your experience with your Premium collection homes? Do you have a favourite one?
Albina: First of all, when you stay in these homes, you feel like you're part of the community rather than just a visitor or a stranger. You can go to the local grocery store, pick up the things you like, wake up in the morning, make your own breakfast, and enjoy the beautiful countryside around you.
It feels much more like living in the destination rather than simply visiting it. And, of course, the homes themselves are really nice and more spacious in the Premium Collection.
And I think our favourite homes are the South of France and the French Alps Chalet.

The views from our chalet are just amazing…I just love looking out at the mountains in the summertime. Even when you see Mont Blanc, it can still be covered with snow, so you get to enjoy being there in the summer while also taking in the beautiful view of the mountains covered in snow. It's such a unique combination, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
What have you enjoyed most about being in the French Alps during the summer months?
Darren: One of our favorite things has been riding the electric bikes. Normally, those mountain roads would be impossible for us to bike up and down, but with the electric bikes, it's incredibly enjoyable. There's very little traffic, the roads are well maintained, and you can just spend the day exploring the mountains and countryside.
We've ridden the electric bikes all over the area, and honestly, that's probably been our favorite activity.
Albina: Also, I just love looking out at the mountains in the summertime. Even when you see Mont Blanc, it can still be covered with snow, so you get to enjoy being there in the summer while also taking in the beautiful view of the mountains covered in snow. It's such a unique combination, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
Darren: The views from our chalet are just amazing. The lighting every 10 minutes is like a different scene, because of the way the shadows move and the colors shift. It's just extraordinarily beautiful to sit and gaze out at the mountainside.
What activities do you love doing while you’re there during the summer?
Darren: Besides going on e-bikes, we do walk a lot!
Albina: The nice thing is, in the summertime, there aren’t as many people as in the winter, and it’s just more convenient to get around. Not too many places are open, but it depends on the month you go.
However, by July it starts getting busy again. So if you go in peak summer, like July, there are definitely more things open. There’s still plenty to do, when things are a bit more open, there’s really enough to keep you busy and enjoy the area.
Darren: If you're only there for a week or two, it's very relaxing. And for us, coming from Miami, which is just so hot during the summer, going to the French Alps is perfect. It's just so nice to be outdoors—whether you're going for a walk, sitting on the porch, or whatever it is. It's just a very pleasant environment.
Albina: Also, for me, I love going to the spa, so I’ll often go over to Chamonix. The location of the chalet is pretty convenient, so you can easily go to different cities and do day trips, which is just perfect. Like if you want to go to Lake Annecy, there’s plenty to do and explore in the area.
Will you continue to go to the French Alps in the summer?
Albina: Yes definitely, we’re actually going again this year in three weeks time, which will be the start of July.
Darren: We basically leave Miami the first of June and don’t go back until the first of September. So we just spend the summer in all our August properties!
Albina: Our summer itinerary this year is: we’re currently in our August home in Rome, then we’re going to the South of France, followed by two weeks in Tuscany. After that, we’re heading to the French Alps, then on to Barcelona, and finally finishing in Paris.
Any tips you’d give to someone traveling to the French Alps in the summer time?
Darren: Yes, make sure to pack padded cycling shorts, You’ll need them!
What advice would you give someone looking to join August?
Darren: I think it’s a great value, as long as you use it, it really is a very good value compared to going the hotel route, in terms of the experience you get.
I would say for someone considering it, just make sure your schedule allows you to actually use the amount of time it gives you, because if you don’t use it, it’s not cost effective. So it works out really well for someone who can really spend that amount of time traveling.
And I do think one of the great things for us has been the ability to share it with friends and family. August has a good system that enables that. There are a lot of people who wouldn’t normally have a European vacation in their plans, and it’s very easy to give them what, for them, is an extraordinary gift. For us as owners, it doesn’t cost that much to give someone a free week.
So that’s been one of the best parts, being able to share the European experience with friends and family.
Albina: Also to add, the owners of August have an amazing community platform where people share suggestions on what to do in different places. You can find recommendations, personal experiences, and restaurants people have tried.
It’s actually a really great resource to use and helps you make the most of each stay and just enjoy the experience.
